Poetry can be a ministry. About 1/3 of the Old Testament is written in poetic form. I figure if the Good Lord likes poetry that much ... well it's OK to call it a ministry.
Pastoral poetry, or country poetry, brings a measure of contentment to my life. Reading about peaceful rural scenes takes me back to childhood memories of country roads, fishing holes, and simpler times. A few years back I thought I'd try my hand at writing poetry. I find writing brings just as much contentment as reading. My life has come full circle. Those same childhood memories are now being lived out in my retirement years. Country roads, fishing holes, and simpler times ... contentment again.
"There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works in all."
1st Corinthians 12:4-6
Planting A Seed
Why do you sit and write those poems?
I've been asked by family and friends.
I can't explain it, must be a calling
I don't feel compelled to defend.
It gives me contentment and peace of mind,
As I sit here lost in my thoughts.
Maybe, just maybe I'm planting a seed
To someone who's lost or distraught.
Before I write, I say a prayer;
Lord, put your words in my heart.
Words of comfort, hope, and forgiveness,
Your words of grace to impart.
Yes poetry's a calling, a ministry for me.
So like the prophets of old, I write.
Sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ
To a dark world needing His light.
So if life's got you down, take hold of your Bible,
And open it to John three sixteen.
The light has come, the darkness has gone.
Jesus' blood will wash your sins clean.
