Poetry can be a ministry.  About 1/3 of the Old Testament is written in poetic form.  I figure if the Good Lord likes poetry that much ... well it's OK to call it a ministry.

Pastoral poetry, or country poetry, brings a measure of contentment to my life.  Reading about peaceful rural scenes takes me back to childhood memories of country roads, fishing holes, and simpler times.  A few years back I thought I'd try my hand at writing poetry.  I find writing brings just as much contentment as reading.  My life has come full circle.  Those same childhood memories are now being lived out in my retirement years.  Country roads, fishing holes, and simpler times ... contentment again.

Bob Upchurch

"There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.  There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.  And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works in all."

 The Cowboy

When the Good Lord made the cowboy
In the days of creation past
He took a special lump of clay
The kind of clay that'll last

When God breathed into his nostrils
That cowboy soul came alive
Now it's a far piece from the ordinary
It's soul that's meant to thrive

You see the cowboy is somewhat original
He stands alone in a crowd
He's just as content all by himself
He's confident, but never proud

A cowboy is humble to a fault
Won't offer an opinion til asked
Don't confuse manners with being shy
You go first, he'll go last

Come Sunday morning sometime before noon
His work will stop for the day
A clean pair of jeans, an old wild rag
Time to worship and pray

Now the spring gives way to summer
Summer gives way to fall
The hands of time turn too soon
And the winter awaits us all

But he has a son right behind him
And now there's a grandchild or two
The cowboy way will continue
In the things they say and do

So if you like the feel of an old pair of jeans
A Resistol or a good country song
Then you just might be a cowboy
Or you'll do til one comes along
